I'm not sure I understand what you are implying here.
The patch numbering scheme is to increment the patch and version
numer by one on each patch. So a snapshot of say 1.7.37 is released, then
someone makes a patch to it ... calling it 1.7.37-01. That version of
AfterStep (afterstep --version) is now 1.7.38 .
While this might not be how the rest of the world does it, or even
a GoodThing, that's how it is done now. I hope it's clear.
