checking for libpng... (cached) no

Hej all.

I have just spent a few hours trying to figure out why the as configure script 
fails to find my libpng despite the fact that I have it (downloaded and 
compiled from source). I do not know enough about configure scripts to figure 
out why.

The as version is 1.6.6
libpng is 2.1.0.2 (the tar file say 1.0.1)

Any ideas what is going on?
