/usr/X11R6/bin/afterstep is not a directory (unless you created it). It's
a file.
If you want to know about permissions, read "man chmod" and _The Linux
Installation and Getting Started Guide_, available from your favourite
mirror of the Linux Documentation Project. If you don't know whow to find
that, consult your favourite online searche engine.
