Too many backgrounds

Hello all,
Using AS 1.6.6.
I have an excess of backgrounds such that Start -> Desktop -> Pictures can't
display the whole list. I'd like to add sub-dirs, in the manner of how
Animations is split into three dirs. The problem, of course, is that
~G/L/A/start/Desktop/Pictures is a sort of dummy directory, and the actual
pictures are derived from ~G/L/A/backgrounds. I've tried creating and
populating sub-dirs inside ~G/L/A/backgrounds without success. The key is
certainly how ~G/L/A/non-configurable/startmenu gets built, but this escapes
me, and as we all should know by now, messing inside non-configurable is
futile. I have read the latest and greatest man pages and HOWTO: this problem
seems quite different than simply adding sub-dirs for applications and such. Am
I missing something painfully obvious?
Thanks in advance.
Dave.
