Upgrading Libraries

I was hoping that this was not off topic for I am having some
difficulties upgrading libraries so that I may install ASCP (and other
apps like licq).  When I attempt to upgrade gtk+ 1.0.1 to 1.1.12, I end
up in a cycle of libraries and dependancies, a very long list.  I am
trying to go through one by one and everything appears to be installed
but make fails with numerous undifined references.

My basic question is:  What is the best upgrade scheme for gtk+,
libjpeg, and imLib.  Other programs are now complaining about libqt as
well, which I haven't touched.
