Note this  - that means that you've got wrong configuration
files - 
evidently you copied files from AfterStep distribution
/afterstep/ dir
Things like @with_afterdir@ are suppose to be replaced by
running configure
with the correct path to your AS config.

In this case I would recommend removing everything from ~/G/L/A
and
copying stuff from /usr/local/share/afterstep in there.

Pager was trying to fall back to use xli to display background - 
unsuccessfully - by the same reason.
