Afterstep only detects the colordepth that X tells it. You have
something incorrectly configured with whatever X-server you are running.
man XF86Config and search for DefaultColorDepth to see how to set the
default start-up colordepth. If you are not running XFree86, then man
whatever X server you need to, to find this information - man Xaccel
search for Depth, for Accelerated-X.
