1.5beta4 root and users

I recently upgraded to 1.5beta4.rpm  from beta3.rpm and now I can only
run afterstep as root.  Any time I run startx  non-root i am just
returned to the prompt with no errors.  All libraries are current.
I have even tried wiping out all afterstep entries and ran a clean
install.  I have even recompiled the source.rpm and ran a clean install
but no dice.  All permissions are set correctly and without any error
messages I'm lost.

Any help is greatly welcomed.
