Japanese support in AS?

I'm interested in making a shared computer talk Japanese for a
flatmate to use for e-mail and such.

1) does AS support japanese character sets, or will i have to get a
   replacement WM for her? can anyone recommend an alternative if i
   need one?
2) the JE-HOWTO and FTP sites seem pretty outdated (libc4, talk of
   this new "Debian" distribution ;) - does anyone know if it's been
   made redundant by internationalisation of X or is still undergoing
   quiet development but haven't updated the docs to match?

the box is RH5.x, glibc. any pointers greatly appreciated!
