Meltdown problem

I am running Red Hat Linux 5.1 at runlevel 5. Often when I exit
Afterstep, instead of seeing my pal the Penguin, my screen displays
vertical red lines and my computer freezes. I must literally hit the
reset to reboot. 

	After the last time this happened, I looked at the file 

	.AfterStep-errors

	which contained the line

	melting  melting Colordepth : 24

	Has anyone any idea what this means? And how I can fix it?
