slow load times for backdrop images

Does anybody out there know why afterstep would have problems loading
an XPM/JPEG image as a backdrop? I dumped the image into
/usr/share/afterstep/desktop/backgrounds
and select it from the drop down menu. When afterstep recycles the image
never comes up and the wharf never comes back. Is there
something I am doing wrong. I am using RH5.1 and the version of
afterstep that came with it.
