It sounds to me like you're running only 256 colors. AfterStep in its
default configuration uses ~60 something colors (I'm guessing), which
is more than many other wms, like olwm or twm in their default
configurations. Netscape uses way, way, way too many colors, and they
should be paddled for that, but in the meantime, your options are to
run 'netscape -install', which gives it a private colormap, and
results
in psychedelic effects when you focus on it, or to upgrade your
display
to something greater than 8bpp color. If it's within your reach, I
highly recommend scoring some hardware that would allow you to do
1024x768x24bpp (24 bits per pixel, ~16.7 million colors). Of course,
you should make sure that you're already running the most advantageous
display settings. And, before you buy any hardware, make sure you
consult the documentation for your OS / XFree86 (for Linux, *BSD, etc)
to make sure that the new hardware is supported. I run Solaris x86,
and my Diamond Stealth 3000 w/4MB VRAM is a dream, but I don't know
what other OSes like it.
