Just to add some more info...

I've tried changing them with
        % xmodmap -e "keycode 115 = Alt_L" &
and xev correctly reports the key as Alt_L, with a keysym of 0xffe9.
This is identical to the 'real' Alt_L key, except the keycode are
different (155 vs 64)

However, nothing recognizes this remapped key as an Alt key (or anything
else for that matter).

Anyone with any more info?
