The one thing that I can suggest is to tell you that I have had problems with the RPM formats. Nothing against whomever did them, I've just seen errors from various files. My suggestion to you would be to compile your own AS from the source code and install it that way. Since I did that I haven't had a single problem. I'm using 1.455N6.
As for the ~GNUstep directory... you shouldn't have to copy that. This directory structure is created the first time that you successfully run AS. This isn't something that you should have to put into place. Again, get the source code.
