start menu order: by time, alphabet, colour or blood type?

is there really a pattern to how my start menu orders itself?

mine works like:

MENU ORDER ls -1u ls -1 ls -1c
Apps/ 0_nop 0_nop Machines
Config/ Apps Apps Screen
Forms/ Config Config Xterm
Modules/ Forms Forms Apps
Quit/ Machines Machines Quit
Machines/ Modules Modules Forms
Screen/ Quit Quit Modules
0_nop Screen Screen Config
Xterm Xterm Xterm 0_nop

the only documentation on start menu order has claimed it uses time,
but i suspect this isn't true ... ;) is there some other magic setting i
could use? am i misreading timestamps?

two other quick questions:
- start menu fonts sometimes don't appear in bold, sometimes don't
highlight in automagically created menus (pictures, look.* etc) - is
  this a feature?
- does anyone know how to set up xdm to allow selection of bpp depth, or
is that not easily managed? (i'm hoping it doesn't require swapping the
Xservers files in place to make this a reality)

cheers,

chris
