asmodem problem

Has anyone gotten asmodem to work with RedHat 5.0? I talked with Rob
Malda and he says that it has been done, but he can't remember what had
to be changed.
Here's the story
================
I managed to get it to compile and run (by inserting "#include
<linux/types.h>" before the include of ppp_defs.h). However, the
program will not run unless my modem is already in use. That is, unless
there is already a lock file in existence, the program will crash with a
segmentation fault and do a core dump. I realise the segmentation fault
likely comes from trying to read the lock file after a failed fopen().
However, I don't have the time to look thru the code ( it's obfuscated
to the point of annoyance :) and then correct the problem and test it.
Also, I thought there would be a huge chance that someone else has
already done it... don't want to waste my time, either.
Has anyone out there already encountered this problem? If you have, and
you know of a patch, please point me in the right direction?
Thanks in advance.
