This could be a combination of things.  1) you don't have enough colors on
your monitor because your Xserver isn't providing them or 2) your video
card can't handle the required bpp or 3) you have allocated too many
colors to your xpms in icons and wharf.
Solution: run X with a higher bpp (where possible), reduce number of
colors that xpms use (read man afterstep look for TextureMaxColors) in
your look file, or get a better video card (which may not be feasible at
this moment.)
