One thing i was not doing correctly was appending just the word
afterstep (by default afterstep is already
loaded into a path that will work without having to type it in
manually)

the exact thing i used

echo afterstep > ~/.xinitrc

this worked right away

this worked with 1.4.5-3

I wonder if you would have changed what path afterstep installed to when
you ran .configure then make and finally make install.

unless you ran an rpm package that i havent seen or used yet.

Maybe this will help I hope it does.
And now for my Question

I'm wondering where 1.4.5-3 places its background.xpm files and such.
using xfm set to display hidden files
under my non root login i am not seeing the files that are listed on the
1.4.4 docpage. Wnen i login as root or su to root I cannot see them as
well. Is there a new common location for afterstep files that changed
since the 1.4.4 release?

Oh yeah This Window manager is beautiful elegant and just breathtaking.
As someone new to linux in general
and used to MS Interfaces this is a welcome change and did i say
beautiful? No more words.

Ahhhh
