I've had this happen to me when the system clock gets set backwards in
time (eg, from 5:00 to 3:00). The menus also behave strangely.
The problem here is that the timestamp from the X server is suddenly in
the past, and things that wait for a certain time to pass before acting,
fail.
I have no idea if this is the cause of the bug you reported, though. If
it happens again, maybe you could set the system clock forward a day or
so, and see if that fixes it?
