The first time you started AS, it created a GNUstep directory in your home
directory. The way I did exactly what you're talking about is I went into
this folder and (down a few levels in non-configurable) edited the
background files associated with each desktop. Now granted, this may not be
the prettiest way of doing it but it works. You can either rename and .xpm
"background" or you can create a symlink to any .xpm of your choice (of
course naming the symlink background as well). That should do it for you.
