colors in Afterstep

Hello,

first I want to apalogize if this is not the right list to ask it to.
But I'm a little confused about using colors.

I'm using 8bit colors, so I can use 256 colors simultaniously in my Xserver. Does
Afterstep allocates those 256 colors in advance ? I thought that every
application could do that on their own. And if the former is true, which
colors are allocated ?

The reason I'm asking this is the following : when I start Afterstep
I'm pretty sure that I'm not using 256 colors. I do have a background
(black/grey) and wharf uses the ASBBlockMarble texture. But that are
at most 100 colors or so.
When I'm trying to start xmcd (a CD player), it says that it cannot
allocate a color entry for let's say "Yellow". So my 256 color
entries are all used ?
When I start Netscape there is no problem ?!? I thought Netscape uses
lots of colors and my CD-app is using almost 10 ?!?

Is there a way to see how many colors-entries are still available ?

Thanks for any explanation,
Bart De Win.
