customizing the menu?

I'm not sure what it's called, but i'm referring to the thin bar on top of
the screen that is created when you open something, such as rxvt, or xv,
or an xterm. Lets say i open all 3 of these, on top the bar is devided
into 3 and each third has the name of the thing opened....what's this
called? I want to customize it and have a pixmap instead of the grey color
i have now. How do i do this?
