Still having .xinitrc problem

Taking advice from this list I have modified my .xinitrc a little.  It now
looks thusly:

xhost athene
xhost aquarius
xiterm -geometry 80x24+0+22 -sl 300 -fg green -bg black +vb &
xiterm -geometry 80x24+148+229 -sl 300 -fg green -bg black +vb &
xautolock .......etc.
exec afterstep

Before, everything went fine except for the xiterms which would not load.  So
I added exec before afterstep and now I can see the xiterms pop up a white
rectangle (before afterstep has loaded) and then it goes away.  These two
rectangles appear while the grey mesh background is still up.  So.... it
works a little better, but it's not quite there.  Any ideas?
