I had the same problem. I did the following after installing 1.4 over
1.0:

#whereis afterstep

then went through all the ones I found and did a 

#afterstep -v

on each of them.

this told me that all the ones it found were verion 1.0.

so all I did was delete them all, copy the afterstep binary into
/usr/bin and away it went.

but this probably won't fix your X getting badly killed problem.
