how you start X makes no difference (startx, Xstart, runx, xdm) debian will
always start the first WM in the window-managers file, if you also have a WM in
an .Xinitrc both will be started. why waste the memory.

the fact that it wasn't listed , was because you didn't install the debian
afterstep package, you probably compiled the source yourself, a debian package
contains scripts that configure the software it installs. and a WM.deb will add
itself to the window-managers file when installed (dpkg -i, dselect)
anyways, it's your choice how you configure X, but if you stay with starting it
from xinitrc, then i'd suggest you remove all entries in the window-managers
file
