Tired of such questions, I've changed it to:

su root -c "make install ; make install.man" ; echo afterstep > ~/.xinitrc ;
startx

* or just run install.script if you don't understand what this line does.

mv ~/.xinitrc ~/xinitrc.before.AfterStep
