Well Debian doesn't REQUIRE that you have your window manager on that
list, having .xinitrc in the home directory will work fine as long as you
use startx to well start x :)
It might be required if you are using xsession instead of startx but I've
never tried this and it works ok.

I have no mention of afterstep in that windowmanagers file and I haven't
had probs.  Just my 2 (canadian) cents :)
