AfterStep is not installing right

Actually I should say I am not installing AfterStep correctly. I am
running Debian 1.3 and kernel-2.0.33. I have Xfree86 installed 3.3.1 and
I am trying to install AfterStep 1.4. I think that my problem is that I
am missing something AfterStep is looking for when I do 'make' I saw a
message sail by when I was sitting there but could not see what it was. I
remembered having some trouble with AfterStep before when I did not have
xpm or lib6 installed so I started dselect and pulled in the Debian
packages for xpm and lib6 (the lib6 I found on their server was a
development one, I used it before without any problems). After
downloading those files I started overfrom the beginning and repeated all
the steps
for installing AfterStep, it still doesn't work. When I startx i get
xwindows with the default-looking wm. If I search for .xinitrc it doesn't
show up on my harddrive. Can I undoe the AfterStep setup and start over
from the beginning, should I start from the beginning? Are there any other
packages I
need installed before trying to rerun the setup for AfterStep?

Thank You,
Keith
