Afterstep and multiple displays

AS has an option to run in multiple displays. However I have used startx --
:1, with a call to afterstep in my .xinitrc.
1) Is there any advantage in using the AS built-in feature?
2) Can I change from one display to another using a Unix command such as I
could include it in the Wharf ? I have cycled between the displays using
Ctrl-Alt-Fn combos.
