can't load AfterStep unless root

I have something not setup correctly because I cannot load xwindows
without being logged in as root. All that happens is that it starts and
shows me a gray screen then returns me back to the shell. I am assuming
that is because it is not able to load AfterStep because I did not setup
rights for my other users. I have a lot of trouble doing anything unless
logged in as root and I would like to start using regular users but
don't know how to setup rights properly so I can function. I can't even
dial the internet logged in as a regular user. Is there a HOW-TO on
setting rights?
Thank You
Keith
