AfterStep-1.4.5.55N Installation Aborted

I tried to install AS-1.4.5.55N and I got as far as the "make Makefile"
part just fine.  But when I issue the "make" command, the process aborts
and displays this error message:

You must have sgml tools & run make html to make afterdoc

Can you please tell me what this exactly means and how I could resolve so
I could complete the AS installation?  Much appreciation in advance!
