start menu problems

Thanks for answering my last note so quikly...

However, I am still having a problem.  When I edit the start directory,
then choose "Update Startmenu"  the desktop refreshes, but then I lose
the menu, and if I left click on the desktop or drag a window with the
mouse AfterStep dies and kicks me out of X windows.  Any thioughts?!?...
