I hope this is -lxpm.  (note the 'l' not '1')

Did you run the configure script?  Do you have a /usr/X11/lib/X11/xpm.h
file (I think this is where things are - there may be slight differences
as I'm running FreeBSD and things aren't in exactly the same places).

Did the build even finish?  My guess is no if it can't find the xpm.h
file.

Once you've gotten things worked out run "make install" and it will move
the stuff to the directories you chose by editing configure.h and
hopefully then you won't have to muck w/ a path.  Also, make sure the link
you made (ln -s blah blah blah) is removed (I think the make install will
overwrite it but ...).

Finally, you may want to move back to a more stable version - 1.4.5.3 as
1.4.5.55 is a development version and on the bleeding edge.
