Are these "errors" or "warnings"? errors will cause the make to stop,
but warnings are okay - they usually are due to something not being needed
by your ./configure, and leaving an erroneaous "}" or "main" not
returning pointer "int" - these are all okay.
To be able to help furthur, we'd need to see what the errors are if indeed
they are errors.

Welcome to Linux, and I hope your stay is as rewarding as mine has been.
There are many books for Linux. A good first book would be one or all of
the following:
Using Linux 3rd Ed.; by Jack Tackett Jr. & David Gunter; QUE Corp.
Running Linux, 2nd Ed.; Matt Welsh & Lar Kaufman; O'Reilly &
Assoc.
[ O'Reilly and Associates are at www.ora.com - look for linux,
they have several - and they are the best for these types of books]
After you have read these, you can get any of the other specific books
from O'Reilly that you might wish to learn - "Learning the Bash Shell",
"Linux Network Administrator's Guide", "Learning Perl", "Learning Vi",
etc.
