My best advice to you is to stop using v 1.4x.  I have been much hapier
with v1.1 and as far as I know it is just as stable (the only bug that I
notice in v1.1 is that it does not handle shaded windows too well).

But nonetheless, none of the "features" that you are complaining about
exist in v1.1.
