This is happening to me as well, and I believe I've religiously followed the 
instructions included in the tar.gz, without changing any of the config 
files in any non-prescribed way.

> did you try to specify a DOS path in your .Xclients ?? (ie, C:\afterstep)

Is this remark supposed to help solve the problem?
