The large picture is, while Caldera agree to continue to host the
DNS this year, they would like for "us" to look for someplace else to
maintain it. Ideally, this other place would a) provide long term
hosting, b) allow an off-site admin to update/maintain/modify the DNS and
MX records at will without having to have someone "get around to it" at
the site. This is just for the DNS/MX stuff; likewise Caldera also
maintains the general AS ML, so if the DNS left from Caldera, a place
would need to be found for the hosting of both the mailing lists, with the
ability to archive them. And inferred is the bandwidth to handle this as
well as the processing power to handle any required cgi (god for bid it'll
be php3 ... over my dead body (: ) This could be the same place that the
DNS/MX domain hosting is done as well, or not - I don't think it matters.
As for the FTP site, it appears that Red Hat has done something
right and we're not at 100%, although we're always at +/-93%; so this
might be under consideration to be moved as well. And my personal
thoughts on things being on the same machine/line/company building is that
it's not always good to have all your eggs in one basket. If the host
should have the fiber cut outside, the whole thing would go down. Some
say "Yes, and the DNS will to", but if you have the IP (or even in cached
NS) you'll still arrive at the machine that isn't at the same location.
The www site is perfect and I don't wish to move it just for the
sole reason of consolidating the site.
As for companies like ISP's hosting these, I don't think it's a
good idea as I mentioned in the first mailing. :)
