Yup, this does seem to produce very odd results.  Perhaps adding a note 
to the man page along the lines of "don't do this" is in order?  I don't 
see that Scroll'ing AS menus is all that useful.

Are you using egcs?  egcs is much more standards compliant than gcc, 
although it's still not 100%.  It's probably possible to detect older 
(broken) g++'s in configure and only compile AfterVoice if egcs is 
available.  A caveat, though: I've had extremely poor luck with optimizing 
c++ programs with egcs.  ie, compiling a program with -O1 almost always 
causes segfaults.  I use egcs 1.1b.
