Actually, this is sort of my own view, but in discussing this with my
girlfriend last night, she suggested a trick that might be worthwhile.
This would only work for the FAQ, but could be used in my planned
revisions to asdoc (and as soon as I get unburied here, I'll really get to
work. I swear. But it's an if and only if, folks!):

Instead of giving absolute references, all SGML-base docs could give a
(say) "{install-path}/bin" or "{install-path}/afterstep" or whatever.
Then, a link could be put in the SGML from all instances of
"{install-path}" to a section on intalling, and where things go/should
go/might go. This would be a section link (the HTML equivalent being a
"#" link). I dunno. I think I'm signing up for a lot of maintenance
headaches (and a near-complete re-write of the FAQ, but hey, I'm about to
do that part anyway), but it seems that it might actually be useful, if
only we can get people to install and READ the damned docs.

So, what do you think?

A.
