This is already implemented as the patch.

Those of you, who fill lucky, can go to :
http://members.xoom.com/sashav/afterstep.html

and grab the most recent Pager source. This thing implements mentioned
functionality, plus
many many more - like scaling root image to pager's windows, and other
stuff.
Be sure to check out Pager Update page found in the same place.

To use the source:
1. copy Pager dir to AfterStep-1.5beta3/src
2. apply included afterstep patch
( patch is for beta1, so if you have beta3 - change all occurences of
./AfterStep-1.5beta1/ to ./AfterStep-1.5beta3/ )
3. goto /AfterStep-1.5beta3 and run
      ./configure
, then goto the /AfterStep-1.5beta3/src/Pager and run
     make
4.copy Pager executable to /usr/local/bin - or whatever install path you
use and start playing with it.
5. send me your bug reports.

This patch should also be available from /unreleased-patches on David's
site.

Currently this functionality is broken - Pager's normal reaction will be to
crash quietly,
if you specify non-xpm file as the background.

you can if using this new Pager code.

Wrong. Pager_noxpm will not do any background stuff at all.
