Well, I picked up gtkstep, and installed it: 
"Goodness; now that's what I'm talking about!"
Needless to say, I'm keeping gtkstep on my machine :-)

Out of curiousity, is there a way to reduce the sizes of the
radio and checkbuttons on the fly?

Thank heavens for that. One caveat though:
your tarball put the sources in gtk/gtkstep/* as supposed to
gtk/*.   I recompiled and reinstalled the entire thing only to discover that
I had to move them. So perhaps you should make a note of that.
