patching?

How are all of you today?

I need to upgrade from 1.8.0 to the next stable release and, I have one
problem. I have never "patched" anything. Where do I find the patches and
how do I apply them to the source?

I also have one other question/bug. If I select a new background asetroot
starts up. And stays in my winlist even after the new bg is in place. The
only way to get rid of it is to kill it. By right clicking the winlist (so
as to iconify it) then select 'kill' from start>windows>kill. It does not
show up in a ordinary "ps ax" and trying to stop it through
start>modules>stop>stop asetroot is a futile attempt. Is this an old topic
that was fixed a long time ago and when I upgrade will be fixed?

Thank you for your time and bandwidth.
